A wall sconce is seen at close range. Its position needs to work with a mirror, headboard, doorway or stair, and with the people using the space.
Draw the whole wall before marking an electrical position. The center of the fixture, center of the backplate and center of the light source may be three different points.
Use height guidelines as a sketching tool
For a general decorative sconce, 60–66 inches from the finished floor to the fixture's center can be a useful visual starting point. Adjust for the fixture's actual shape, the ceiling and the user's sightline.
Before rough-in, use the mounting drawing to locate the box. A tall asymmetrical design may extend well above or below that connection.
At a mirror, assess the face as well as the frame
Side lighting can help balance illumination across the face. Draw the mirror, vanity and fixtures together, then check the shade's distance from the mirror edge and its position for the intended users.
Confirm suitability for the actual bathroom location and applicable installation requirements for the selected model. Appearance alone does not establish a fixture's location rating.
Beside a bed, start with the mattress
Mark the finished mattress, pillows and headboard. Sit in the reading position and check where the light falls, whether the source is visible and whether controls can be reached comfortably.
A decorative ambient sconce serves a different purpose from an adjustable reading light. Confirm the intended function before deciding on height.
Along a hall, use the architecture for rhythm
Doors, panels and openings are better starting points than a universal spacing formula. Sketch the sequence from the entrance and check each fixture's projection into the route.
For stairs, review the elevation from both directions. Your installer should confirm clearances and the appropriate position for the site.
In a living or dining room, keep the hierarchy clear
Sconces beside art or a sideboard can provide an evening layer when the chandelier is lowered. Align them with the complete wall composition, rather than centering them in whatever space remains.
A related metal tone or material can connect different fixtures. Test the color temperature together if they will normally be switched on at the same time.
